How it works
- Move the decimal point until there is exactly one non-zero digit before it. That gives the coefficient.
- Count how many places you moved it. Moving left gives a positive power of 10; moving right gives a negative one.
- To convert back, move the decimal point right for a positive power or left for a negative power, adding zeros as needed.
Frequently asked questions
What is E-notation?
A short form used by calculators and spreadsheets: 4.52e-4 means 4.52 × 10⁻⁴.
Are trailing zeros kept?
No. 1200 becomes 1.2 × 10³. If those zeros are significant figures in your work, write them in the coefficient yourself (1.200 × 10³).
