How it works
- A whole-number exponent means repeated multiplication: 2⁴ = 2 × 2 × 2 × 2 = 16.
- A negative exponent means 1 divided by the positive power: 2⁻³ = 1 ÷ 2³ = 0.125.
- A fractional exponent is a root: 8^(1/3) is the cube root of 8, and x^(p/q) is the qth root raised to the power p.
- Any non-zero number to the power 0 equals 1.
Frequently asked questions
Why is a negative number to a decimal power undefined?
It would need an even root of a negative number, for example (−8)^0.5 = √−8, which has no real answer.
How are very large answers shown?
Answers of a quadrillion or more, or smaller than 0.000001, are shown in scientific notation, such as 1.2 × 10¹⁸.
