How it works
- To simplify, divide both sides by their greatest common factor: 12 : 18 → 2 : 3.
- Decimal ratios are first multiplied by a power of 10 to make whole numbers: 1.5 : 2.5 → 15 : 25 → 3 : 5.
- To solve A : B = C : x, cross-multiply (A × x = B × C), then divide: x = B × C ÷ A.
Frequently asked questions
What’s the difference between a ratio and a fraction?
A ratio compares two parts (3 : 5), while a fraction compares a part to the whole (3/8). A 3 : 5 split means 3 of every 8 parts.
