Average Calculator

Type or paste a list of numbers to get the average (mean), median, mode and range at once, with every calculation explained.

Separate numbers with commas, spaces or semicolons. Decimals and negatives are fine.

Average (mean)

5.6

of 5 numbers

Median
7
Mode
7
Range
7
Sum
28
Smallest
2
Largest
9

Step-by-step solution

Worked out with your numbers. Change any value above and the steps update.

  1. 1

    Add all the numbers

    3 + 7 + 7 + 2 + 9 = 28

  2. 2

Mean: divide the sum by how many there are

    28 ÷ 5 = 5.6

  3. 3

    Sort from smallest to largest

    2, 3, 7, 7, 9

  4. 4

    Median: the middle value

    position 3 of 5 = 7

  5. 5

    Mode: most frequent value

    appears 2 times = 7

  6. 6

    Range: largest − smallest

    9 − 2 = 7

How it works

  • Mean = sum of all the numbers ÷ how many numbers there are.
  • Median = the middle value once the numbers are sorted. With an even count, it is the average of the two middle values.
  • Mode = the value that appears most often. If every value appears once, there is no mode.
  • Range = largest value − smallest value.

Frequently asked questions

Which average should I use?

The mean uses every value, but outliers pull it. The median is better when a few very large or small values would distort the mean, such as house prices or salaries.

Can a list have more than one mode?

Yes. If two or more values tie for the most appearances, they are all modes.
