Rounded

3.14

2 decimal places (hundredths)

Original
3.14159
Rule
5 or more rounds up

Step-by-step solution

Worked out with your numbers. Change any value above and the steps update.

  1. 1

    Find the rounding place

hundredths: the digit there is 4

  2. 2

Look at the next digit to the right

    1 < 5, so keep the digit

  3. 3

    Drop the digits after it

    keep 2 decimal places = 3.14

How it works

  • Find the digit in the place you are rounding to.
  • Look at the next digit to its right: 5 or more rounds up, 4 or less leaves the digit as it is.
  • Drop every digit after the rounding place (or replace them with zeros for tens, hundreds and thousands).
  • Numbers are rounded exactly as typed, so 1.005 correctly becomes 1.01, unlike some calculators.

Frequently asked questions

How are negative numbers rounded?

Halfway values round away from zero, so −2.5 becomes −3 and 2.5 becomes 3. This is the rule most schools teach.

Why do some calculators round 1.005 to 1.00?

Computers store most decimals as approximations. This calculator works on the digits you type, so it always follows the written rule.
